I knew most of TInPanAlley songs when I was 10. Ragtime, War Ditties
@Rasta Cute song. Obviously Johnie was getting very tired and his girl still needed to get where she wanted to go, but then !
@ddmgmgh The Risque songs of the day. I can't find the other one, "Mary took her calves to the dairy show" but I have the others tucked away. I grew up singing them since I was 10. Took time to find them online
@Rasta I didn't know that one but we had many sorts of similar songs here, pretty sure it had something to do with so many of our fathers and their friends being in WW2.
@ddmgmgh In my family history, there were sea captains that found their own way here, but my Grandfather served in both world wars, in the Army, my Father served in the Army in Peacekeeping, in Gaza no less! I did a few years in the Navy, so collectively, we've got 100 years of service.
I used to amaze some old Veterans at their club, when someone sat at the Piano and I knew all the words.
@Rasta You got this stuff in your DNA man. I think there is also a collective maritimer sense of humor in that mix too.
My notion of the source of this genre comes from spending many nights at Legion parties, playing music for them, those guys knew how to have a good time.
My dad loved to play and sing those songs at home with his old friends, many talented musicians from their army days, but he never went inside the legion hall, ever.
@ddmgmgh I wasn't sure geographically where you were? In Canada we have Legions, in the USA, I've attended Veterans of Foreign Wars club and in UK I think there's another name. .Wherever ex-military and veterans have a club, we've been invited. And had a good time.
@Rasta Where we are out West, some of the towns were very small, yet nearly every one had a legion hall, and that hall often doubled as a town hall. Lots of parties in those, but the old vets showed everyone else how to get on together. I used to DJ for many of those events, there were still WW1 guys there when I started.
@SoftwareTheron @ddmgmgh
I don't know if it's related to Legions, But I stayed in the UNION JACK club (servicemen's rooming house)
between my flight and the next train to Southampton
